KIDNAPPING & SEX TRAFFICKING OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

Historical References and Anniversaries

March 1, 1524 – Phil Konstantin notes in his book, This Day in North American Indian History, that an American Indian boy is kidnapped by explorers.

This incident is also referred to on the Athena Review,Vol.3, no.2: Peopling of the Americas  – The East Coast Explorations of Giovanni Verrazano (1524) website.

On the Panama History – Age of Exploration Time Line website
( http://bruceruiz.net/PanamaHistory/age_of_exploration_time_line.htm ) there is mention of the March 1, 1524 trip of Giovanni Verrazano, as well as another explorer Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba, who would have reached the Yucatan in March 1517. This site notes that the group with Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba purposed to kidnap Indian slaves to replenish Cuba.

March 1, 1932 – The day that the Lindbergh baby was kidnapped. (This Day In History

All of that history brings us to the concerns of today. The kidnapping of Indigenous women and children for the purpose of supplying the sex trafficking trade is growing in the US. Please see the following articles. The first is one I came upon a couple of years ago. Its an article that was published in 2009 by the Minnesota American Indian Women’s Resource Center.

This next article was published about 4 months ago (2012). It was written by two women associated with the Minnesota American Indian Women’s Resource Center and is posted on the National Online Resource Center for Violence Against Women. I’ve provided two links. The first is the article in its entirety, and the second is a summary by the VAWnet.

Sex Trafficking on the Web in 2012 (When I first wrote this article)

Need confirmation that we need to pray about this serious issue? Check this out. I did a search on the internet and found these sex trafficking events scheduled for March 2012. I was trying to find the information on Bride Trafficking show March 2, 2012 – Current TV, which is about foreign ‘brides’ coming to Western shores. I’m hoping the below links address the issues of exporting women and children, rather than importing. Although it ALL needs to stop.

Prayer Regarding Kidnapping & Sex Trafficking of Indigenous People

“Father, thank you for our children. We know that our children are a gift and a heritage. Since the beginning of time, people have sought to destroy children. People have used children wrongfully in so many ways, including selfish gain. Children have been traded and stolen, bartered and sold. Father, have mercy on us. Yahweh, by your mighty power and by your perfect will, stop the kidnapping and trafficking of indigenous people throughout North America. Break and destroy the old curses and strongholds. Deliver our women and children from these horrors. Reveal, expose and stop every trafficking operation in the name of Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit and according to your perfect will. Yahweh, pour out your restoration and healing on all of those who are victims. Restore families, restore souls, restore spirits, restore physical bodies. Manifest your divine interventions. We cry out for your justice and mercy. We trust in your faithfulness. Reveal areas that your people can take action. Give your people courage, hope and wisdom. Rise up an army of warriors to bring our children home. Thank you, Father. Amen”

DISPLACING INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

1960 & 2012 Dam Projects

March 7, 1960 – Phil Konstantin writes in his book, This Day in North American Indian History, that the Supreme Court ruled against the American Indians in favor of a New York dam. You can find the same reference on another website, Canku Ota – A Newsletter Celebrating Native America – February 12, 2000 – Issue 03, where they quoted from Konstantin’s book.

Currently (2012), indigenous peoples of Brazil are facing the traumas of a power plant / dam project, called the Belo Monte, which could potentially displace 40,000 people. See the links below for more details. These are informative sites. I recommend you watch the video. Prayer Regarding Displacing Indigenous Peoples

“Father, thank you for your many miracles and wonders. Thank you for your patience as we zealously run wild with new breakthroughs in science and technology. Father, thank you for the many mercies you bestow upon us in our seasons of trial and error. Yahweh, throughout history, advances in technology and science, called ‘progress’, have been bittersweet. Sweet for those who benefit and bitter for those who don’t. In North American, often it has been the indigenous people who suffer because of progress, or the withholding of progress. We’ve seen examples of that through these huge dam projects. Right now, the indigenous peoples of the Amazon are threatened. Their health, their families, their homes, their way of life, their culture, the land, the creatures .. they are all at great risk. Father, we cry out and ask that you give us wisdom in how to pray regarding the Belo Monte dam project. Father, we ask that those who are pursuing this project will listen and hear what the indigenous people are saying. We ask for your divine intervention in the talks. We ask for your divine intervention in the proceedings according to your perfect will. Father, we ask that you protect and save the indigenous people who are in danger. Father, this is just one instance. All over North America there are conflicts over water rights, land rights, power and electricity availability and resources. Father, manifest your power. Tear down the strongholds. Usher in deliverance and mutual understanding. Create opportunities and solutions that help all people, bringing them together. Father, we trust in your strength and wisdom. This, as with the other prayer needs, is so huge and completely out of our power. Yet, you are bigger. We pray that your will be done. In the name of the Father, the son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Amen”

children of the infidels,” and 10,000 acres of land were set aside for that purpose. It was not until 1691 that the College of William and Mary was finally chartered. Many Indian students were brought there in the succeeding years.”

(For Scripture references, see below following the last prayer point about eagle feathers.)

Prayer Regarding Civilizing of Indigenous Peoples

“Father, you are a God of honor and protocol. You design people and you bring them into groups, building cultures and societies. North America was once rich with different tribes, bands, clans and nations. Creation is full of order. There are natural laws and spiritual laws, as well as the laws of man. You, as the Trinity, demonstrate community. Yet, your people consistently take their eyes off of your wonderful face, and begin to make demands on one another. Sometimes out of control, sometimes out of fear. The indigenous peoples of North America have suffered greatly, as foreigners have imposed their own beliefs, practices, standards, and rules. Father, there is no doubt that you purposed for the peoples of Europe to meet the peoples of the Americas. There are many prophecies that tell of your plans. Yet, as prophecy became reality, people threw in their own interpretations and plans. The authorities of churches and governments lead the way. Father, we ask that you bring down the strongholds and curses that plague this country in regards to the non-indigenous peoples trying to shape and mold the indigenous people into forms contrary to your perfect design. Father, we pray that you will remove the roots of early ‘civilizing’ and replace them with your ways. Turn the hearts of your people toward you. Poor out your healing balm on your indigenous people who have suffered. Your heart has always been to bring your people together in unity and maturity of faith. However, the enemy has taken that plan and brought destruction. Father, stop the destruction. Bring healing and restoration. In the name of the Father, the son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

“That any Indian born in the United States, who is the head of a family, or who has arrived at the age of twenty-one years, and who has abandoned, or may hereafter abandon, his tribal relations, shall, on making satisfactory proof of such abandonment, under rules to be prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior, be entitled to the benefits of the act entitled “An act to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain,” approved May twentieth, eighteen hundred and sixty-two, and the acts amendatory thereof, except that the provisions of the eighth section of the said act shall not be held to apply to entries made under this act:

“Provided, however, That the title to lands acquired by any Indian by virtue hereof shall not be subject to alienation or incumbrance, either by voluntary conveyance or the judgment, decree, or order of any court, and shall be and remain inalienable for a period of five years from the date of the patent issued therefor:

“Provided, That any such Indian shall be entitled to his distributive share of all annuities, tribal funds, lands, and other property, the same as though he had maintained his tribal relations; and any transfer, alienation, or incumbrance of any interest he may hold or claim by reason of his former tribal relations shall be void.”

Prayer Regarding Trading Identity for Land

“Father, that you for the many gifts you give us, including our ancestry and inheritance. Thank you for the many blessings we receive through our families and communities, both in the natural and supernatural. You put us in families. You created us and you determined when and where we would be born. You determined our race and our individual qualities. You designed us to wear our identities with pride, knowing that they came from You. In your scripture we learn about the deep sorrows that come when we lose our identity, whether it is stolen, sold, given away or neglected. Father, we thank you for the many mercies you have shown this country, even with its history of stealing, killing and destroying identity. Father, many indigenous people abandoned their tribes, bands, clans, and nations when offered a place to live and land to own. They were enduring hard times, trying to do the best for their families, and faced with the gut wrenching choice that could mean life or death. Father, we pray that you restore families, restore communities, and restore hope. Oh Father, have mercy on all those who are descendant of people who abandoned their tribes. Poor out your healing. Restore identity. Father we pray for all those who remained with their tribes, and judged those who didn’t. We pray also for their descendants. We pray that you release them from the strongholds of judgment and condemnation. Father, we ask that you manifest your miraculous healing of generational wounds. In the name of the Father, the son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

GOVERNMENT RAID TAKES EAGLES FEATHERS FROM PASTOR

Historical References and Anniversaries

March 11, 2006 – During an annual pow-wow, government officials confiscated Pastor Robert Soto’s (Lipan Apache) eagle feathers. Through our prayer ministry and radio shows, we’ve been following Robert’s fight. It is now approaching it’s 10th anniversary. (At the time of this article, there was an upcoming date on March 8, 2012. See below for a 2015 update.) The raid and the taking of feathers are violations of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.  Please see the links below.

Prayer Regarding Taking Feathers

Pastor Robert Soto writes (2012):

“Dear Friends: I thank you for all who wrote or called to let me know you were praying the meeting between our lawyers and the lawyers of the Department of Interior. I got a call yesterday afternoon to inform me that no agreement was met. So this means that we will be going to court on March 8, 2012 where both sides will give their petition to a federal judge who will decide what will happen next. So this is what more likely will happen. If they win, we will appeal and if we win, they will appeal. So whatever happens, the fight will more likely continue.

“I want to thank Attorney Milo Colton and Attorney Marisa Salazar for all their hard work. They have not only served me and my case but served the Native Community of Texas tirelessly. They need our prayers. They have been nothing but a blessing to me and my family. I know that God the Creator will bless them for all they are doing.

“If you would like to show your support for this, you can attend the hearing on March 8, 2012 at the Federal Court building on the corner of US Business 83 and Bicentennial Blvd. in McAllen. If you come, make sure and be there early and dress appropriately. No shorts or t-shirts are allowed. Cell phones or recording devices are not allowed in the courtroom and will be collected at the security entrance. I also ask you to be in your best behavior whether we win or lose.

“Again, thank you for your prayers and support. Keep this date in prayer as we feel like little David who confronted the giant Goliath. But we go with the faith of David and with the strength of God the Creator. God bless, Robert Soto”

==================================
2015 UPDATE ON EAGLE FEATHER CASE
==================================

Robert Soto writes (6/1/2015)

“Dear Friends:   First of all, I want to thank all of you who have been praying for our lawsuit against the Department of Interior. This fight has never been about the feathers and about me. It has been about the spiritual rights of all Natives and the restoration or re-establishment of our rights as Natives to use the sacred objects given to us by God the Creator in our ceremonies, gatherings and pow wows. When I was confronted by the feds, I refused to give them my two golden eagle feathers on my porcupine hair roach. My first statement to the agent trying to take them away was, “I am Indian and as an Indian, it is my right to use these feathers.” When he asked me to give them to him, I told him no. I knew it was only a matter of time before he discovered I was not from a tribe recognized by the federal government but I was not about to give them up that easily. I finally gave them up but on my terms. But it was then that I decided that this fight was not over. That this fight was about to begin. Yesterday was a good day in court. Everything we wanted, the judge gave to us. But you must know, again, that this is not about me; it’s about God. From the very beginning, I knew that God has a special calling for these eagle feathers. After all, if Psalm 139:16 was true, then God the Creator knew that undercover agents were going to invade our pow wow and take fifty of our feathers. By the way, Psalm 139:16 states, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” That tells me that before the foundations of the earth were established by God, before I was even conceived, God knew that on March 11, 2006 undercover agents were going to come and threaten to arrest me for what they called the illegal possession of eagle feathers. As I prayed I said to God, “If you knew this was going to happen, why did you not stop it?” Then I heard His voice in my heart say to me, “Because I want you to fight for what is right and let me work through you.” It was then that I decided I had no choice but to pursue this suit to change the laws.

“On May 27, 2015, we returned to court. The Department of Interior wanted the judge to dismiss the case and we want to continue to fight. I would like to summarize what happened. The judge allowed the Department of Interior’s lawyer to go first. He presented his argument why the judge should dismiss the case. By the way, this was before the same judge who gave the Department of Interior their win a couple of years ago. The first reason he gave was that I had already gotten my feathers back; after all, wasn’t that what I had wanted? To this the judge stated something like this: “This has never been just about the feathers.” He went on and elaborated that this was for changes in laws that rule our spirituality. The second argument presented by the Department of Interior was the statute of limitations; after all, this has been going on for nine years. I’m not sure of the exact words but the judge said something like this: “You have had nine years to stop this fight and now that you have lost, you are trying to use this?” Then he reminded them they could have done this a long time ago. He then denied their request to dismiss the case based on that it had been going on nine years. We had now won round two. Attorney Luke Goodrich, one of our lawyers, requested that the judge put an injunction against the Department of Interior to keep federal agents from harassing or threatening us for the use of eagle feathers. The judge said that he did not see an imminent danger of federal agents harassing dancers so he turned down our request. But he did take it one step higher. He said in case the federal agents ever came to our pow wows, to just give him a call and he would put an immediate restraining order against the Department of Interior. So in a good sense, we won round three and have kept the case open to fight another day to change the unfair laws and regulations that control our spirituality and the use of sacred objects like eagle feathers.

“So with this in mind, we will return to court sometime in the near future where we will once again argue that what was taken away from us back on March 11, 2006 was our right as spiritual people and that the government does not have the right to say who can or cannot use sacred objects in ceremonies, gatherings and pow wows and that the government does not have the right to interfere in our spirituality. I will continue to fight for what I feel in my heart is right. If I win, all glory to my Lord and Savior. If I lose at the end, all glory to my Lord and Savior too. Then I will take my eagle feathers and put them on my roach and start the fight all over again if need be.

“Keep us in prayer. The day the government came into our circle, which our elders taught us was sacred, was the day they attempted to destroy all that is good and just in His sight. They tried to take away our Indianness once again, but as our ancestors before us, we do not go down easily. We no longer fight with guns and bows, but with the wisdom and knowledge we have gained from their ways and the ways God the Creator places before us. Thank you for your prayers and thank you for your years of support. We have just begun to fight.

“I want to thank our lawyers, Milo Colton and Marisa Salazar, for their tireless effort to fight on our behalf. I also want to thank Luke Goodrich of the Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty for taking the reins and helping us continue the fight. I also want to thank Mike Bennett of Baker Botts for their effort to help us win this case. But foremost, I want to thank my God and my Savior for the strength, power and wisdom He has given us.

God bless,
Robert Soto
Pastor and Vice Chairman of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas”

Books Used in this 12 Month Study

The Holy Bible in the following translations: KJV, NIV, Amplified, NASB, CEV and The Scriptures.

“Church History in Plain Language” by Bruce L. Shelley

“Encyclopedia of Native American Wars & Warfare”. General Editors William B. Kessel, Ph.D. and Robert Wooster, Ph.D.

“This Day In North American Indian History” by Phil Konstantin

As with the First Nations Monday prayer and Scripture studies, I like to study with 5 translations. As you go through these studies, I encourage you to do the same. “The Scriptures” is a translation that includes the original Hebrew names and has the books in chronological order. The Contemporary English Version (CEV) is a translation that is written for ‘oral tradition’ peoples and it flows well while reading it aloud. The Amplified version is one where meanings of words and phrases are ‘amplified’ for better understanding. The King James Version (KJV) is the translation that works well with Strong’s Concordance. The Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) is a great companion version that I find gives great insight.
